Let’s look at the problem here folks. Summer comes…We wanna hang out at the beach and look good while doing so. Or we are on the way to a flat stomach and want to keep our calories in check. In case you’re on a keto or Low-Carb Diet, you need to keep your Carb or Sugar intake at a low level. With that said the majority of people keep a very close look at their food then it comes to calories and sugar intake, but don’t have their drinks in mind. Especially when you’re drinking alcohol you might forget very quickly your goals and chug down a drink, which will have up to 200 calories per glass.
But it doesn’t have to be that way!
There are a bunch of fillers out there and for the majority of them there is a diet or sugar free version out there, which tastes the same or sometimes even better and has none or only a fraction of calories compared to the normal version. We are looking today at the Moscow Mule and its calories. With that said the same is valid for a Kentucky Mule or any other Variation of a Moscow Mule.
So let’s start and first have a look at a standard Moscow Mule and how many calories here are in a standard serving:
Standard Moscow Mule Recipe:
- 2 fl oz of Vodka (125 calories)
- 6 fl oz of ginger beer (72 calories)
- Optional: 1 tsp of simple syrup (48 calories)
- 1/2 fl oz of lime juice (4 calories)
And with simple math it adds up to 249 Calories per Mug!
Now let’s take a closer look and identify ways to reduce those calories and transform it into a Skinny Mule!
Vodka
The biggest calorie-bad boy is the vodka. Responsible for half the calories in a Moscow Mule. Unfortunately there is no diet version of liquors yet, so the only solution is to cut the alcohol and take a pass on a buzz. But to be honest if I have a night out with my friends I just want to have a couple of drinks and don’t count every single calorie. In case you still want to go virgin, we have the perfect Virgin Moscow Mule recipe for you. But we can still cut those calories even without cutting out the vodka!
Simple Syrup and Lime
This one is easy and a small step towards lower calories. When it comes to limes they are a very small contributor regarding calories. So the simplest solution is to just put them in your drink. The simple syrup is bigger bad boy. The easiest way is to cut it out completely. Your Moscow Mule will be a little less sweet but it won’t harm the overall experience. Or you just don’t give up on any of those two and get yourself a Sugar Free Lime Syrup! No calories, no sugar and much easier than squeezing limes!
Ginger Beer
This is where it gets interesting! The Ginger Beer has the highest calorie count besides the vodka, and we can cut those little fat monsters completely. Almost every Ginger Beer brand has a sugar free or zero calorie version. And this is how we will keep our flat stomach all year round. We collected 4 of the best brands, summed them up and declared the calories. Our winner is Barritt’s Sugar Free Diet Ginger Beer with zero calories and with a great balance of spicy and sweet. The Q Ginger Beer is another great choice. It purely made as a filler and has a higher level of spicy and carbonation.
With that said we present you our ultimate Skinny Moscow Mule:
Skinny (Girl) Moscow Mule Recipe:
- 2 fl oz of Vodka (125 calories)
- 6 fl oz of Barritt’s Sugar Free Diet Ginger Beer (0 calories)
- 2 tsp of Sugar Free Lime Syrup (0 calories)
Half the calories (125 calories) and the same taste sensation.
Thank us later. Cheers guys and keep those abs tight!
And even if you have to cut calories you don’t have to cut the fun! Check out our favorite drinking games!

What’s your recommendation towards vodka?

Hi Tina,
since Vodka by itself doesn’t have any calories and the actual calories come from the metabolism in your body, where the alcohol is split and one of the products is sugar, there is no Vodka brand which is lower in calories.
Good Vodka brands I usually use are Absolute and Skyy. They also have the best quality-price-ratio.
I hope I could help.
Greetings
